Kamas Valley - Fall 2006
Normal Birth Sequence

A normal delivery for an alpaca. This was a first-time mother, Noche del Rio Oso, delivering her daughter Fiesta del Rio Oso on 6/18/01.

1 Muzzle appears 2 Feet follow
See the membrane still covering the legs? That will dry and rub off quickly. Once the cria's head is clear, it begins to sneeze and cough to clear it's breathing; all while still attached to the umbilical.
3 Nearly There!
The hardest part is getting the shoulders through; there's often a pause in labor while the dam rests after that effort.
4 Final Push
Gravity helps with the last part of the delivery, and the cria slides to the ground.
5 Head's Up
Within moments of delivery, the new cria begins to struggle to raise it's head and coordinate it's movements.
6 Settled In
Still wobbly, but comfortably resting in the sternal position. It won't be long before she will try standing.
7 Legs getting organized
The cria begins trying to stand within an hour or less of birth. Many false starts, but she's determined!
8 Curious
The yearlings are very curious about the newest herd member!
9 Resting with Mom (Noche)
Later that same evening, Fiesta rests alongside her mother.
10 Big Girl
Fiesta is now 5 years old, and has delivered 2 crias of her own. Her 3rd cria is due Fall 2007.
